What can it cost?
In the last 24 months, the number of customers we work with has increased by over 300%. We believe that two driving factors for this are:
- The shift in collection responsibility that has been underway during this period. A force that will drive collection from recycling stations and into housing associations. Waste from thousands of public recycling stations, to be moved to Recycling room or other property-based collection systems.
- The trend of switching to environmentally managed tariffs. This means that properties with poorer packaging separation are penalised financially.
Packaging responsibility
Bintel has an exciting partnership with FTI, which is currently responsible for the collection of packaging in Sweden. Together we have connected thousands of containers across Sweden. The aim is to understand the waste streams and in this way, together with FTI, set up the best possible waste management, a best practice for recycling stations.
What we at Bintel are now seeing with the new collection responsibility is that the market seems to assume that:
- Some of these containers will remain, but under municipal management. This takeover will be made easier by the data Bintel has been collecting for some time from these containers.
- Some containers will disappear and be replaced by bins in Recycling room or other recycling systems. In this area, the data Bintel collected becomes even more useful, data that tells us what additional waste streams to expect in the environmental spaces. At the same time, the waste streams are moved into the application where Bintel has a world-leading approach and system.
Environment based tariffs
Furthermore, we see a shift in pricing towards more environmentally managed tariffs. This means that properties with poorer packaging separation are being penalised financially.
This trend naturally follows the macro picture we see, where sustainability is more and more integrated in companies and seen as a core value-creating activity. It is also a trend that follows the multiplied increase in the cost of emission allowances we have seen in recent years.
How does it affect me and my property?
Without action, most people will have a more expensive waste management than necessary, and the cost will increase annually with the global climate transition.
In this shift, many housing associations are asking themselves how to make sure that waste management will work and that they get the right cost? We see that the Cost / Apartment ratio varies widely between property companies. Often we see high costs that, with the right efforts, can be lower. At the same time as improving their sustainability performance and reducing their carbon footprint.
What we experience in the market is a great uncertainty about sizing and how to work to increase sorting and reduce residual waste from its residents.
We understand that it can be difficult to pinpoint which interventions actually increase recycling and at the same time reduce costs in your property portfolio. What we find at Bintel is that with data it becomes much clearer, and the interventions become measurable.
At Bintel, we know what a challenge it can be to optimise waste streams, often with several different actors in the same value chain. With data and a consolidated picture, it becomes much easier to optimise environmental spaces. We'd love to tell you how!
